Caption
St Jerome, one of the Four Fathers of the Latin Church, is seen producing his translation of the Bible into Latin (known as ‘The Vulgate’) with the help of angels, and is identified by his cardinal’s red robe and hat. Although he was never actually made a cardinal he is often portrayed in cardinal' s robes, with the hat as one of his attributes, in recognition of an appointment he held under Pope Damascus I.
