Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Bankes, Lady Jenkinson (1623-1691), after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1660/65. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing to left by a fountain, her right hand pulling up the sleeve of her left arm, in anticipation of dipping her hand in the fountain; wearing an amber coloured dress, with a red curtain background right. Mary, second daughter of Sir John Bankes, married Sir Robert Jenkinson, 1st Bt, of Walcot, Oxfordshire and Hawkesburty, Gloucestershire. This portrait of her was long thought to be of her sister Arabella (KLA/P/1) but early on their identities became confused.
Provenance
Probably copied for Sir Ralph Bankes, MP (?1631-1677) from the earlier original in the possession of the sitter; Dowdney, 1731, no. 75; 1762, no. 52; Musgrave, no. 12; 1905 catalogue; and thence by descent until bequeathed by (Henry John) Ralph Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents in 1981
