Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Mr Stafford': almost certainly Edmund Stafford of Buckinghamshire, by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1660/65. Inscribed : Mr Stafford. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated, turned to left, and set in a landscape with a statue; wearing a gold-coloured cloak, his left hand is on a projection of the rock acting as a foil behind him, his right comes across his breast to touch his left shoulder.

Probably commissioned by Sir Ralph Bankes (?1631-1677); recorded by Dowdney, 1731, no. 73; October 1762 catalogue, no. 54; 1772 catalogue, no. 6, Musgrave, 1797, no. 15; Vigers 1905; bequeathed by (Henry John Ralph) Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents in 1981
