Summary
One of a pair of ebony and gilt brass mounted caskets on associated ebonised stands, the caskets Indian or Indonesian, probably Goanese or Batavian, late 17th century / early 18th century. The stands English, early 19th century. Each casket with a paneled hinged lid held by intricate chased brass hinges and with carrying handles to the sides and with a single drawer below. The whole profusely carved with arabesques of stylized flowers and with gadrooned edges, the corners with bobbin turned pilasters and raised on scroll carved bracket feet. The associate stand of conforming design tied by a shelf stretcher and raised on brass castors.
Provenance
Bequest of the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy made to the National Trust by Henry John Ralph Bankes (1902-1981). NT ownership commenced from 19th August 1982.
