Caption
The identity of this gentleman is unknown although the fashion of his sumptuously-painted costume dates the picture to the 1630s when Strozzi was working in Venice, giving rise to its current title.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Venetian Gentleman by Bernardo Strozzi (Genoa 1581 - Venice 1644), circa 1630s. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, his right hand on his hip, a hat in his left; he wears a black dress with red lining and white sleeve showing, lace collar and long black wig; at the right part of a column is visible.
Provenance
Sale, Willis, 15 December 1915, bought by Buttery (1868 - 1929) and acquired by Mrs Greville in 1916 for £650; The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943.
