Caption
The identity of this sitter is unknown although his costume, notably his crimson cap worn just-so and pinned with a jewel, indicates that he was a man of fashion. He may well have been a resident of the prosperous city of Cologne as the picture has been attributed on stylistic grounds to an anonymous artist working in that city. This painter is now referred to by the title of one of his major religious works.
