Margaret Greville's full-sized Dame Commander of the British Empire medal 1922
Full description
The Dame Commander, Order of the British Empire hangs from a red ribbon. The cross is enamelled in pale blue and it is surmounted by a crown. There is a central crimson circlet surrounding an image of Britannia. This medal was designed to be worn near the left shoulder on formal occasions. The certificate awarding this accolade to Margaret Greville is in the collection NT1246404
Provenance
Awarded to Mrs Greville by King George V. Date of acquisition not recorded, but probably originally at 16 Charles Street, Mayfair, Mrs Greville's London home, and bequeathed by Margaret McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville (1863-1942) with Polesden Lacey, to the National Trust, in memory of her father, William McEwan (1827-1913) in 1942. This item found on the probate inventory record for Charles Street chattels at Polesden Lacey, miniatures and objects in the safe, page 45.
