Summary
A walnut side table or "console", French, circa 1580, carved in the manner of Jacques Androuet du Cerceau (1510-1585), restored and possibly modified in the 19th century, the rectangular top above a moulded and carved frieze on a central shaped support centred by a grotesque mask against scrolled strapwork, flanked by urn shaped end supports pierced and carved with a demon figure developing into leafy scroll, raised on carved trestle feet and stretcher. Several comparable tables are known in museum collections, one at the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv.7216-1860), also considered to have been made in the 16th century and restored, others are said to have been constructed, probably 1800-1860 using matching original pieces, combined with parts from other tables of a similar form and some 19th century elements. There has not been a systematic study of surviving tables yet and it is therefore difficult to date them with certainty.
