This view of the Rue du Gros-Horloge in Rouen shows figures going about their daily business under the shadow of the Gros-Horloge, the great medieval clock, one of Rouen's most famous landmarks. Other figures are shown gathering water from the fountain, which depicts the river God Alpheus and the nymph Arethusa. William Watson-Armstrong, later 1st Lord Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1863-1941) spent time in Rouen as a young man learning French.
