Oil painting on canvas, Llyn Cynwch, Dolgellau, by Thomas Danby (Bristol c.1818 - London 1886), signed and dated, bottom left: Thomas Danby 1853. A mountainous landscape with cattle watering in a lake and a shepherd boy lying asleep in the bracken in the foreground. This is a sketch for Danby’s 'How Shepherds lose their Sheep', which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853 (no.1228) The title of this picture is taken from a label on the back of the stretcher.

J (?) Wils...May 1853; Armstrong collection; transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
