Emmerson painted this view of Bamburgh Castle from the north, with a rocky beach in the foreground, four years before Lord Armstrong bought the castle in 1893. Bamburgh was purchased with the intention of turning it into a convalescent home in memory of Lady Armstrong. The picture was not in Armstrong’s collection, but was purchased for Cragside in 1995.
