Provenance
Presumably commissioned by Robert, 1st Marquess of Londonderry (1739–1821), circa 1786, to commemorate the providential escape of Robert, Viscount Castlereagh and later 2nd Marquess of Londonderry, the only son of his first marriage, in a sailing incident of that year; thence by descent; given to the National Trust by Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) in 1976

On a cartouche on the frame: [Beginning:] This view of STRANGFORD LOUGH is forever memorable for the providential escape, on August 5th, 1786, of ROBERT STEWART, aged seventeen years, and of HENRY STURROCK, a boy of twelve: who sailing on the lake and overset in a thunderstorm near three miles from the shore, floated on the water more than an hour; till they were taken up in a boat by the activity and collected conduct of The Revd; Mr. CLELAND… (and) The Revd Mr. STURROCK… On the back of the gilt cartouche, on a small, round, white label: 584 On the back of the top member of the stretcher, in pencil and encircled: 4 On the back of the top member of the stretcher, upside down, typed on a white label: Irish Houses and Landscapes / Belfast June 27th – July 20th / Dublin Aug 2nd – Sept 22nd / Artist: Unknown / Temple of the Winds / Lent by Lady Mairi Bury
