Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Tobias and the Angel, after a painting by Cristofano Allori (Florence 1577 - Florence 1621) which was finished by Zanobi Rosi (active 17th century), 17th or 18th century. The narrative on which this painting is based is taken from the book of Tobit in the Old Testament Apocrypha. Tobias on the right, and the Archangel Raphael on the left, are shown in a landscape. Raphael wears white, with a maroon cloak and yellow-and-gold robe, gesticulating to Tobias with his right hand, while holding Tobias' right hand in his left. Tobias wears a blue habit with a charcoal-grey cloak. In the narrative, Tobias was sent to collect some money that was owed to his father, and on the way was instructed by the Archangel Raphael to catch and gut a fish, whose gall could be used to heal his father of blindness. In this painting, Tobias is shown carrying the casket containing the fish's gall under his left arm.
