Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Lady, called Mary Cowan, Mrs Alexander Stewart (1713–1788), attributed to Sir John Baptist de Medina (Brussels 1659 - Edinburgh 1710), late 17th century. A half-length portrait of Mary Cowan, wife of Alexander Stewart, who bought the demesne of Mount Stewart. She is shown in a dark green dress, clasping a bright red cloak, with a pillar and an orange curtain behind her to the right. The identification of the sitter as Mary Cowan is impossible, given the date of the painting.
Provenance
On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust 2013.
