Summary
A walnut side chair, one of a set of four, British, circa 1680, the upright back with frame with reeded front edge, inset with a brass-nailed petit-point needlework padded panel (later) backed with woven red rep to the rear, the overstuffed seat covered with brass-nailed petit-point needlework (later), on turned and block-section front legs with shaped feet and rear square-section legs, the front, rear and sides each with a variously heighted turned stretcher. The needlework panel to the backrest depicting a parrot and butterfly among a variety of flowers and leaves, the seat depicting flowers and leaves. The lower rail of the upright back applied with a brass plaque to the rear inscribed 'MARION'.
Provenance
On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013.
