Summary
A set of four walnut side chairs, British, circa 1680, each chair with an upright back, the frame with reeded front rim and inset with a brass-nailed petit-point needlework panel (later) backed with woven red rep to the rear, the overstuffed seat covered with brass-nailed petit-point needlework (later), on turned and block-section front legs with shaped feet and rear square-section legs, the front, rear and sides with a variously positioned turned stretcher. The needlework covers depicting varying arrangements of birds, flowers, leaves and butterflies. The lower rail of each upright back applied with a brass plaque to the rear inscribed 'CIRCE', 'HEDWORTH', 'MARION', and 'CHARLEY'.
Provenance
On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013.
