Inscribed on back of canvas 'Sir Henry Bedingfeld Bart, of Oxburgh Hall.
Provenance
On stretcher: the property of Lady Petre; probably given by Sir Richard Bedingfeld, 5th Bt to his eldest daughter, Charlotte ( d. 1822), who in 1815 was married to William, 11th Baron Petre (1793 - 1850); thence presumably by descent, until alienated - possibly after Thorndon Hall was gutted by fire in 1876 - more probably - when the Petres moved back from Thorndon to Ingatestone Hall in 1919, when there may have been no room for the picture; offered to Sir Henry Bedingfeld, 8th Bt (1860 - 1941; succeeded 1902) by a stranger, and reputedly handed over to him on a mutually convenient station platform. Then by descent to Sir Henry's daughter Frances, and kindly loaned to the National Trust by her daughter.
