Summary
Tiered giltwood Gothic shrine or tabernacle. Bonham's catalogue entry 'A C17 German carved giltwood tabernacle, the upper section of arched form with pierced angled projecting panels within crocket finials, the lower section of hexagonal outline with pierced tracery panels against a painted blue background'. Once used as the exposition throne, for displaying the host during benediction, in the Roman Catholic Chapel at Oxburgh, and recorded there in a watercolour by Matilda Bedingfeld in c.1850. It was dismantled in the 1860's and displayed until 1951 in the Kings Room.
Provenance
Part of the Bedingfeld Collection. Sold in the 1951 sale, and bought by the National Trust at the Bonham's sale in 2004.
