Summary
An ebony, ivory, tortoiseshell, rosewood, ebonised beech, giltwood and gilt brass mounted cabinet on stand, Antwerp, circa 1700 The top section with a dentil inlaid molded edge above an arrangement of fourteen variously sized drawers, each inlaid with ebony and ivory chequer cross banding and a waved ebony molded edge centered by tortoiseshell panels. The drawers around a pair of conforming mirrored cupboard doors with tapered pilasters opening to reveal a mirrored architectural interior with gilt canopy and half turned columns and with a chequered floor. With eleven further small drawers around the recess. The lower section has a retractable surface inlaid with a geometric pattern and with a hinged folio front with three drawers below. The whole raised on six twist turned ebonised legs with giltwood caps and terminating on bun feet. In poor condition.
Provenance
An original Oxburgh piece, sold at the 1952 sale. Was bought by Mr Marshall Sisson, architect, and subsequently bequeathed to the NT.
