Summary
Kangxi porcelain baluster jar decorated with a literary allusion, a night scene of ladies in a garden witnessing a vision.
Provenance
Part of a small collection of porcelain donated in 1976 by a descendent of Stephen Wootton Bushell (1844-1908). Bushell was a leading 19th century British authority on Chinese porcelain and coinage, an interest he developed from 1868 while working as physician to the British Legation in Beiljing. He collected Chinese books, ceramics and coins and was employed as an agent by both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum to purchase objects on their behalf until his retirement c.1900. His widow donated much of his collection to the British Museum in 1909.
