Caption
The identity of this gentleman is uncertain. However, the assumed date, the sitter’s robes, and the Viscount’s coronet on the table, have led to his identification as Francis Browne, 4th Viscount Montagu. Browne was the second husband of Lady Mary Herbert and died without issue. There are no other known portraits of him in existence, which makes his identification here all the more tentative.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Called William Herbert, 3rd Lord Powis and 1st Marquess of Powis (1626-1696), but really Francis Browne, 4th Viscount Montagu (1638-1708), English School, circa 1670. A three-quarter-length portrait, of, possibly, the second husband of Lady Mary Herbert who died without issue. He points his right hand to a coronet on the table beside him,on the left and is wearing cloak and cravat, with full wig.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963. Recorded at Powis Castle in Montgomery Collections Vol VI P.148 in 1873.
