Summary
Clock by Thomas Tompion, c.1680, with 'two-minute' seconds dial and a 'ten-hour' dial in aperature above, in oak workshop case with later walnut/ivory veneer, single-train, three-pillar weight driven movement with verge escapement and short bob pendulum. Made to check the accuracy of other clocks. sent to 'The Story of Time' exhibition at Queen's House, Greenwich, for one year.
Full description
A workman's clock by Thomas Tompion. c1680. Four hour dial, with a two minute seconds dial and ten minute dial within it. Crown and verge escapement with short bob pendulum. Latched plates. Silk suspension with no adjustment. Backcock not original and made using red brass. 6lb lead weight, and small lead counter weight. Matching pulleys. Repair marks on back of the dial 'R&Co /23/3/1971'.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
