Summary
William and Mary (c.1690) longcase clock, the striking movement with calendar action, by Edward Bridgeman of Covent Garden, in a walnut and ebony case, the front panels richly decorated with floral marquetry, the top altered from a slide up hood. Bridgeman was apprenticed in 1655 and was a member of the Clockmakers Company, 1662-1703.
Full description
An English 8 day striking longcase clock by Edw. Bridgman in Covent Garden. CC 1662-1703. Walnut and ebony case with front panels richly decorated with floral marquetry. Seconds dial. Date aperture (operative). 24 hour calendar wheel. Latched plates. No longer a rising hood. Hands not original. Anchor escapement. 13lb weights. Count wheel striking on bell (internal). Hour only. Wound using a crank key with brass collet on top a good fit (Measures 5.50). Trunk lock & key. Hasp, but no hood latch. Repair marks on front plate: ‘25.1.39 R&Co’. ‘J(?) Matthews B Castle 1838 Feby 12th (+1872)’. On backplate ‘July 1840’ and ‘Matthews 1850 (?)’. On back of dial ‘A H E Lecluse’. On 3 new catches: ‘E.Gent 1987’.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
