Summary
A large silver gilt casket from a pan set; with segmented filigree panels with chased floral borders, the panels profusely decorated with coloured enamels, and set with turquoises and foiled glass in colours; the domed and hinged lid mounted with a carrying handle and fastened by a hasp and staple. Case lined with a silver brocade mat. Ensuite with other filigree pan sets within the collection. Circular wooden base covered with red silk velvet (formerly for a glass dome- in Clive Store). Printed cotton and brocade mat in the base of casket. Lucknow, late 18th/ early 19th century.
Provenance
Recorded in 1944 Inventory as ‘An 11in silver casket of native Indian work engraved and enamelled with panels of filigree enriched with precious stones on stand with glass shade' in Tapestry Drawing Room (Blue Drawing Room). Purchased by the National Trust with funding from The National Heritage Memorial Fund from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in August 1999.
