Summary
Tray - One of six square-shaped stacking trays from a twelve-piece gaming set. Wood covered in black lacquer, the rims gold and the centres painted with a net pattern overlaid with floral motifs, surrounding a cusped central cartouche decorated with four butterflies ad simple flower motif. Chinese, c.1750-70.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). Included in 1774 inventory as 'A [black and gold Japan] Dressing box with nests of boxes'. Purchased by the National Trust with funding from The National Heritage Memorial Fund from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in August 1999.
