Summary
Ladle with nephrite jade bowl and enamelled silver gilt metal handle; the shallow ovoid bowl is carved with acanthus leaves and trefoil at its narrow end, where the handle is fixed by two rivets. The thin curving handle is made up of diamond -shaped silver gilt plaques chased with leaf-like veins and applied to an unidentified core. The green enamel coating is now largely missing. Mughal (possibly Oudh), c.mid 18th century.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). Inventory 'Goods etc, Pack'd up at Claremont 1774; 1 Do (Jade Spoon) wh. Enamel'd handle'. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
