Summary
Box, veneered with tortoiseshell and ivory, with a sheet of brass foil, possibly gilt, under the tortoiseshell veneer on the lid. The mounts of silver or tutenag (crude zinc) (one carrying handle missing). The lining sandlawood; the base covered with green baize. E.India (Vizagapatam), mid 18th century. Provenance
Probably collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). '1 Tortoise and Ivory Box in Wax Cloth' is mentioned in a 'List of Packages belonging to Lord Clive' c.1765. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
