Summary
A 'khanda' sword with a steel basket hilt; watered steel blade with applied steel reinforcement plates at the forte. the double-edged blade broadens out towards the tip. Broad knuckle-guard and spiked pommel, the grip is bound with string. The hilt is undecorated except for a moulded band of chevrons and circles at the base of the facetted pommel spike. The double-edged blade follows an early South Indian form. Blades of the same shape can be seen on swords presented to the Prince of Wales in 1875-6 by the Princess of Tanjore and are described as South Indian. Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
