Summary
Oil painting on canvas, possibly Margaret Brooke, Lady Denham (1642 - 1667), after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 - London 1680), 18th century. A copy from an original painting by Lely sometimes said to be of another sitter, the 'beauty', Mary Bagot, Countess of Falmouth and Dorset (1645 - 1679), in the Royal Collection. A portrait of a young woman, three-quarter length, facing, head inclined slightly to the right, gazing at spectator, holding stick (? crook) in her left hand, her right elbow resting on a ledge; her hair worn loosely, falling behind, her forehead fringed with shall ringlet curls, pearl ear rings, single strand pearl necklet; wearing a décolleté shift over which a drape, from her right shoulder is held by a long jewelled string from her right shoulder to her waist at her left hand side; large drape behind her head, to the right can be glimpsed a landscape of trees and sky.
