Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary of Modena (1658-1718) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723) and Studio, circa 1685. A portrait of Mary of Modena, the Queen of King James II, as a young woman, three-quarter length, standing, turned slightly to right, head inclined slightly to left, gazing at spectator, wearing an embroidered dress covered with jewels, and an ermine lined cloak fastened to the shoulder of her dress by ropes of pearls, her left hand holds the top of a crown on a table.
Provenance
In Chirk Castle house catalogue, c.1900, as in Saloon. (Shown on diagrammatic hang [north wall, top register between fireplace and right door) and in manuscript picture list as “7. Queen Mary of Modena.”; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust); accepted by the Inland Revenue in lieu of Inheritance Tax from the estate of Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) and transferred to the National Trust for display to the public at Chirk Castle in 1999
