Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Commander, called General John Lambert (1619-1684), manner of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - Blackfriars 1641), inscribed bottom left: 'Genl Ld Lambert'. He was Commander in Chief of Parliamentary forces under the Protectorate and captured Chirk Castle in 1659. A portrait of a mature man, supposed to be General Lambert, three-quarter length, standing, turned three-quarters to left, looking over his left shoulder, wearing full armour, a blue sash tied round his left arm, a baton held in his right hand.In the background on the left is a half-effaced group of riders in the background. This portrait bears no resemblance to certain portraits of General Lambert and may not even be English.
Provenance
Date of acquisition unknown; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust); accepted by the Inland Revenue in lieu of Inheritance Tax from the estate of Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) and transferred to the National Trust for display to the public at Chirk Castle in 1999
