Summary
Oil painting on canvas, James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde (1611-1688), in Garter robes, manner of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1682. A three-quarter length portrait, standing, turned three-quarters to the left, facing, gazing at spectator, wearing full-bottomed wig, lace stock and Garter robes. His left hand is drawing aside his blue cloak, revealing his scarlet suit and his right hand holding his wand of office of Lord High Steward and his Duke’s coronet on a table beside him, at the left. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and visited Chirk in 1684.

Provenance
A set of six Garter portraits at Chirk possibly acquired as perquisites by Frances Whitmore, Lady Myddelton (1666 - 1694) when Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Anne, before she became queen in 1683 and brought to Chirk on Frances's own marriage in 1686; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust) On loan to the Trust from Guy Charles Myddelton. Gifted to Guy C Myddelton from Captain David Myddelton in 2010. Purchased by the National Trust from Mr Guy Myddelton in 2023.
