Summary
Oil painting on panel, Called Sir Hugh Myddelton, 1st Bt (1560-1631), Dutch (Frisian) school, early 17th century. A head and upper shoulders portrait, of an elderly man, turned slightly to right, supposedly the brother of Sir Thomas Myddelton I. He is gazing at spectator, with grey wispy hair, moustache and beard and wearing a large elaborate lace ruff. Formerly known as an 'unknown man by Ravesteyn', Christie's catalogue, Saturday June 22, Monday June 24 and Tuesday June 25 1895, lot no. 362.
Provenance
Henry Doetsch, 7 New Bond Street; acquired at his posthumous sale, “the creation of the last twenty years”, Christie’s 22-25 June 1895, lot 362, as by Ravesteyn of an anonynmous sitter; thence by descent; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust); purchased in 1994

Verso: The catalogue entry and title page of the catalogue are stuck to the panel; Christie’s stencil: 42 J. (The number of the entry has somehow slipped, since 358, the number now there, was a Dutch portrait of a lady of c.1620; only 362 amongst the Ravensteyns would fit)
