Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Catherine of Berain (1535-1591), English School, 18th century. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, turned three-quarters to left, looking in same direction, wearing a black dress and hood, white standing-collar, small white frilled cuffs showing above her hands which are clasped in front; her right hand over her left, with two rings, one on index finger and on third finger. Katheryn of Berain (Catrin o Ferain) was a Denbighshire noblewoman married four times into local gentry and a grand-daughter of Sir Roland Velville, a natural son of Henry VII. She is known colloquially as the 'Mother of Wales'.

Provenance
With some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust). On loan to the Trust from Guy Charles Myddelton. Gifted to Guy C Myddelton from Captain David Myddelton in 2010. Purchased by the National Trust from Mr Guy Myddelton in 2023.
