Caption
The identity of this sitter is not known although an inscription on the portrait gives his age as fifty-six and dates the picture to 1633. The painting was evidently commissioned as one of a pair (Polesden Lacey, National Trust 1166736.2), almost certainly by a married couple of some consequence – note the landscape views indicative of a country estate. They resemble the portraiture of the Delft artist van der Vliet.
