Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Gentleman, attributed to Fray Juan Rizi (Madrid 1600 - Montecassiano 1681), circa 1630/80. A three-quarter length portrait of a man in dark seventeenth - century costume with a lace collar. A Benedictine monk, this artist worked extensively for his order and for the court in Madrid before going to Rome. His style is sober and realistic, owing a debt to Velazquez which has sometimes led his portraits to be confused with those of Velazquez' assistant and son-in-law, Mazo.
