Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Still Life with Flowers and Peacock by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (Lille 1636 – London 1699), 1690s. The artists was one of the great exponents of the Baroque flowerpiece. He painted similar overdoors at Versailles and was invited to England by Lord Montagu around 1690 to paint for Montagu House and Boughton.

Bought by the Ministry of Works from Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel (1887-1959) (Christie's, 7 March 1958, lot 32) and transferred by HM Treasury to the National Trust in 1958
Marks and inscriptions
Verso: on the lower member of the stretcher, the stencil: 583 LN; on the central vertical member of the stretcher, in chalk: MAR-7-58. Verso: On frame: in pencil, on the left-hand side [right from the back]: 6 ft 2 ¾ x 4 ft 7˝; also in pencil on the same side: 5925; in chalk, on the bottom: P. O. D.; in pencil, on the right-hand side [left from the back]: four crosses, each surrounded by a circle.
