Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Robert Walpole, later 1st Earl of Orford, KG (1676-1745), as Ranger of Richmond Park by Joseph Allen (Birmingham 1769 - Erdington 1839), circa 1800. After a painting by Jonathan Richardson the elder (1664/65 - 1745) at Althorp, circa 1735. A three-quarter length portrait of Sir Robert Walpole, Prime Minister between 1721 - 1742, standing to left in a landscape, wearing dark brown coat with Garter star and leather belt; three-cornered hat; long whip held over right shoulder.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905 – 1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973
