Summary
Oil painting on panel, Prince Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567-1625), after Michiel Jansz van Miereveldt (Delft 1567 – Delft 1641). A head-and-shoulders portrait of second son of Prince William I, 'The Silent' and successor of his father as Stadtholder of the Northern Netherlands. Outstanding military commander of his time who died unmarried. He is looking to right, facing, in gold-embroidered doublet with white ruff, wearing jewels of the Garter.
Provenance
In an undated 19th century Erddig inventory as 'Board Pictures' and separately listed as 'Prince of Orange' and thence by descent; given by Philip Yorke III (1905 – 1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973
