Summary
Oil painting. An oil painting on canvas of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, KG (1679-1700) after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646 - London 1723), circa 1700. An oval framed and painted half-length portrait of the Duke of Gloucester, as a young man, to right facing, in classical armour with ermine-lined cloak over his right shoulder, with jewel of the Great George, the orginal of which is in the Royal Collection. He wears the sash of the Royal Garter which he received in 1696.
Provenance
In an undated early 19th century (circa 1830 at time of cleaning) inventory as; 'Duke of Gloucester from Kneller' and thence by descent; given by Philip Yorke III (1905 – 1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973
