Summary
Oil painting. An oil painting on canvas entitled The Bird's Nester (formerly called 'Matthew James Hutton'), British School, 18th century, after a late 17th century original. A boy, standing half-length in a landscape, holds a sparrow's nest. He wears a greyish-brown coat and large white collar.
Provenance
In inventory of the late James Hutton's house in Park Lane, 27-28 July 1770, as: "Boy & a Bird's Nest, by Vandyke Morillio" [both struck through] but NB that in the Green Closet at Strawberry Hill there was: "A beggar-boy with a bird's-nest, watercolours on ivory; by Mr. Horace Walpole, from Murillo" (Descr., 1784, p.24; sale, 11th day [6th April 1842], lot 53, dated 1735); undated early 19th century inventory of Erddig, as: "Boy with Birds Nest - Dobson" and thence by descent;given by Philip Yorke III (1905 – 1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973
