Musket. A flintlock rampart or wall-gun, the barrel, c1680, signed John Wardale (unrecorded) but stamped with the makers mark of John Emerton of London (fl.1670-84).
Full description
Flintlock rampart or wall-gun of large proportions. The barrel, c1680, signed John Wardale (unrecorded) but stamped with the makers mark of John Emerton, London (fl.1670-84), and mounted on a later stock and lock, c1760. Large brass barrel of round form, the flared muzzle with a turned ring. Engraved along the top with foliage and signed JOHN WARDALE. The ramped breech stamped with London proof marks and the makers mark IE under a star. Later steel barrel tang with sighting groove. Retained to the stock by 3 barrel pins. Wooden ramrod (later) with horn tip. Barrel length 70cm. Diameter at muzzle 48mm. Walnut full stock, the wrist with early style chequering (worn). Engraved brass furniture comprising; buttplate, trigger guard with acorn finial, small side-plate and 2 ramrod pipes. Flintlock, of flat form with boarder-line engraving and signature (indistinct). Top of cock, the frizzen and the frizzen pivot screw missing. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 111.5cm
