Summary
A mahogany chamber horse, or exercise chair, English, circa 1770. With later covered open arms flanking a bellows seat, made of oak boards, canvas straps and metal springs. With pull-out foot rest below. Textile cover has a floral needlepoint top in petit point, glazed floral cotton box pleated skirt and lined with glazed cotton of vermicular design.
Provenance
According to Louisa Yorke (1863-1951), Facts and Fancies, the 'exercise chair was given...by a member of the family. It was delayed in transit and therefore caused much anxiety to the sender. It came by canal...to Chester...The present cover, old wool-work given by Amy Hughes, née Scott, was bought in an old curiosity shop in bath. The Chintz is very old, probably some bought by Elizabeth Yorke, née Cust, circa 1770'. Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
