Oil painting on canvas, The Virgin and Child with Saint John ('The Pinti Madonna'),after Andrea del Sarto (Florence 1486 – Florence 1530), early to mid 17th century.The seated Virgin, centre, holds the naked Christ Child who is standing and has his left foot on her right knee, St John stands to the right, as a young boy with a scarlet loincloth and points and rests his left hand on the left shoulder of the Virgin. Inset above fireplace. After the lost fresco of the in the Tabernacolo di Porta a Pinti in Florence.
Provenance
In around 1677 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
