Summary
Tempera painting on paper laid down on linen, A Satyr with Venus and a Putto by Francis Cleyn the elder (Rostock 1582 – London 1658). A naked Venus reclines on a bed holding a frightened putto to her shoulder whilst a satyr on the left pulls off her covering sheet. The background is composed of classical ruins, in front of which on the right, is a draped green curtain forming a backdrop to the figures of Venus and the putto, the satyr is in a landscape on the left with a classical ruin in the distance and another satyr seen to the far left, a distant horizon with sky.
Provenance
In 1677 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
