Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Head of Saint Paul by Benedetto Gennari the younger (Cento 1633 – Bologna 1715), circa 1675. Painted by the Bolognese artist who had worked for the French court, Gennari was in England from 1674 to 1688. The majority of his English commissions were portraits and religious works for a predominantly Catholic clientele. The Duke of Lauderdale sat for a three-quarter-length portrait (now at Helmingham). This small picture was displayed with a group of four other 'heads' in the White Closet.
