Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Ludovic Stuart, 2nd Duke of Lennox and 1st Duke of Richmond (1574-1624), after Daniel Mytens the elder (Delft c.1590 – The Hague 1648). A head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, short hair, full beared and moustache, wearing black with a large white ruff and a ribbon around his neck with a medallion suspended from it. The life-size original whole-length is at Longford Castle. Ludovick Stuart, 2nd Duke of Lennox and 1st Duke of Richmond, KG (1574–1624). Eldest son of Esme Stuart, 1st Duke of Lennox (1542?–1583) and next in succession to the Scottish throne; president of the council during the absence of James VI, 1588; Lord High Admiral, 1591; after James VI’s accession to the English throne, 1603, made privy councillor and steward of the household; created Duke of Richmond, 1623; married thirdly Frances Howard (1576–1639), daughter of the 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon, and widow of Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford; buried in Henry VIII’s Chapel at Westminster.
Provenance
In 1683 estimate and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
