Summary
A stand for a lacquer and japanned cabinet, probably English circa 1675, carved and gilded softwood, supported by scroll legs carved with acanthus leaves and flowers terminated in out-scroll feet, joined to the front by a large fore-rail centred by a cherub holding foliate garlands, the side rails with similar foliate carvings.
Provenance
Possibly listed in the 1683 Ham House's inventory, in the Museum Room (above the chapel): "One Japan Cabinet wth a Carved [and] guilt frame". Acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002.
