Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville (1690-1763) attributed to Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779), inscribed bottom right: Lord Carteret / Hudson 1739. A three-quarter-length portrait of a mature man, seated, facing, head inclined slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, and gesturing palm upwards with his right hand. He is wearing a full light-powdered wig, frilly cuffs, and a plum coloured coat and waistcoat, a dark cloak is draped over his left arm which rests on a table on the right.
Provenance
In 1844 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
