Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Murray, Lady Tollemache, later Countess of Dysart and Duchess of Lauderdale (1626-1698) attributed to John Weesop (fl.1641 - London 1649). 1647-1669. Three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the left, glancing over her left shoulder and gazing at the spectator, wearing a dark green dress and holding a gold scarf in front of her which hangs from her right shoulder and falls behind her. She has curled blonde hair and grey-blue eyes. A red velvet drape falls in folds behind her to the right and is pulled back to reveal a landscape with trees and sky on the left.
Provenance
Acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
